On March 8th 2012 the first of four encounters programmed by the Pallotti Institute Rome took place on the guiding theme of 'Nourish the hope'. 'A world without God is a world without hope. Reflections on the Encyclical Spe Salvi of Benedict XVI were the theme of the first talk given by Fr Gianfranco Grieco OFMConv, journalist and writer. He is head of the Office of the Pontifical Council for the Family. At the beginning he underlined that the Encyclical Spe Salvi (November 30th, 2007) is preceded by Deus Caritas Est (December 25th 2005) and followed by Caritas in veritate (June 29th 2009). To gather the historical and existential importance of the encyclical Spe Salvi one must hold this trilogy in consideration together. 'We hope that we shall be saved' (Romans 8.24) - writes St Paul and we too remember this. 'Salvation' according to Christian faith- Fr Grieco exhorted- is not a simple fact; hope is offered given and entrusted to us. In view of this, we can face our present: the present 'difficult', dramatic, uncertain and terrible. This our present can be accepted and lived if one leads oneself towards a destination and if this destination is so great as to justify the fatigue of the journey. Hope in the Bible is linked to faith. Fr Grieco lingered on the transformation of Christian faith-hope in modern times against secular hopes and socio-political falls in the course of 20th century history and on places of learning and exercises of hope, prayer, actions, suffering and trials. In the concluding part, he presented the Church as a place of hope and the Virgin Mary as an example of lived hope.

When outlining the contents of the presentations a useful help will be provided by the words of the Popes for the canonization of Vincent Pallotti: John XXIII's homily in St. Peter's on Jan. 20, 1963 and Paul VI's speech in Frascati on Sept. 1, 1963.

The Pallotti Institute in Rome has distributed to all the Pallottine communities in Rome and surroundings the programme for the encounters of Study and Formation for the year 2012. The guiding theme proposed for each evening for reflection will be: 'Nourish hope'. The encounters will be inserted in the ambit of the spiritual preparation for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the canonisation of Vincent Pallotti. 'Nourish hope' was a thought of Pallotti who desired to nurture all, to nourish and enlarge hope contemplating God's presence in his life and promoting works to let God's action shine in the lives of Christians. The encounters for 2012 propose a reflection on four aspects of hope. These are the situation in the modern world in which one is accustomed to a great need for a spiritual dimension of the person; the seeds of hope in the Church at the time of Pallotti; the great faith in God of St Vincent Pallotti and some points of hope in the Church of today. We hope that the prayer together, the reflection together and the meeting of brothers and sisters are favourable moments for increasing the hope that we all have much need of in today's life.PROGRAMME

The fourth and final meeting of the year took place on December 15th 2011 that the Institute of St Vincent Pallotti had proposed for the year 2011 for the reflection on the guiding theme: 'Revive the faith'. The speaker, Corrado Montaldo, vice-President of the International Co-ordination Council of the Union of the Catholic Apostolate presented the topic: 'To live the faith in the communion of the Union of the Catholic Apostolate.' This meeting- has underlined- is full of meaningful ideas that merit more sharing and deeper examination. Faith is a response given by the person to God who in His love calls us to participate in His life. Moreover, faith becomes necessarily 'life of faith'. Faith and life are closely tied. Many have had the experience of an encounter with God and have replied 'Yes' with faith towards events and people. This is confirmed in the lived experience of Giuseppe Leonardi SAC in the Community of Quinta Dimensione. The faith- moreover- is closely bound to history: the history of each one and of the collective. One must record history, reflect on this and discern in each action that God has carried out up until today. This is proved true in the experience of St Vincent Pallotti, in the history of his charism and in the history of the Union of Catholic apostolate. Exploring the General Statutes of the Union one can trace numerous references to faith, in its contents, and in the indications as to how the members should live. In the Union faith is lived in a spirituality of communion: using the memory of the personal encounter with God, meditating upon this and sharing it in life with others. One searches also to transmit our history with God to those whom we meet, intensely living among ourselves the love and the Cross of Jesus, deepening and studying all the patrimony that we have. The life in faith offers occasions to make known the experience of faith to one another and that which God has done in each one of us.

The third of the annual encounters of the Saint Vincent Pallotti Institute occurred on October 13th 2011 as suggested to reflect on the theme of faith in the light of the guiding theme for this year 'to revive faith.' Fr Jerome Vallabaraj SDB professor of Catechesis and youth Ministry at the Pontifical Salesian University was invited to discuss the question of the formation of the young in the faith. The speaker began his presentation with an overview of the most urgent things in the catechesis of the young and he developed the thought of 'Empowering' the young towards the faith that transforms life. The speaker underlined that Saint Vincent Pallotti had the courage and the zeal to begin many changes of the model: the major changes that Pallotti made were the discovery that in the lay world there is a great capacity for good and the education of the young in the faith. The principle new pedagogical approaches in the formation process: According to Saint Vincent Pallotti, you need to stimulate a change in the paradigm in three key areas of youth catechesis that become also the principal objectives: Christian socialisation in the evangelical style of the disciples' lives; enabling from dependence to the process of Empowerment, and from teaching to catechetical learning. The indications contained in these areas are guidelines for those who are engaged in the catechetical learning of the young. The prospect of catechetical learning invites those who are involved in the catechesis of the young to move from a mentality of conquering to an approach of exploration. They do not treat of earning the young, of conquering them or leading them back into the church, but of exploring with them according to their age and culture, the wisdom that makes them live and the signs of God that from the beginning of time He loves to walk with humanity.

On May 12, 2011, the second annual meeting was organized by the Pallotti Institute in Rome. It took place in the church of San Salvatore in Onda. For the year 2011, as planned, there a series of lectures on "Reviving of faith." Under this theme Pier Giorgio Liverani, journalist of "Avvenire", presented a talk on the theme, "Reviving the faith in the journey of the Christian today". The speaker said that from the perspective of faith during the times in which Vincent Pallotti lived and worked, it did not have worse and great challenges than that of today. The age of Enlightenment, the French Revolution and occupation of Italy and Rome had oppressed and influenced the faith. For St. Vincent Pallotti this was the context of constant concern and worry. He took upon himself the apostolic commitment to revive the faith. There were many suggestions that Pallotti proposed to the believers of his time. His proposal was to propagate the faith by word and deed, to join in the Catholic Apostolate to bring about the revival of faith, to renew the Christian Faith and to spread the truth of the Gospel throughout the world. In light of these indications of Pallotti, we can raise the following question: "How can we rekindle the Christian faith today?" In response to this question, the speaker first mentioned a few tools that exist in the church today: that is, the teaching of the Church, the pastoral documents of the local churches and the convening of the Synod of Bishops, which will be held in 2012, on "The new evangelization for the transmission of Christian faith "and in particular, he mentioned about the establishment of the Pontifical Council by Pope Benedict XVI to Promote the New Evangelization. Continuing his reflection the speaker described the scenario today which very much needs to be enlightened by faith, culture, in the social sphere, media, economics, science and politics. One should now make great efforts to be always open to the great challenges of our time and to enter into these realms, that is, to speak and to bear witness to the faith. The laity has a very special task in this field; lay Christians are aware of their role, as laity and of their role in the Apostolic Church. This was what St. Vincent Pallotti always dreamed and endeavored, when he encouraged all Christians to live consciously to their apostolic vocation in the Church according to their state and condition of life.
