The apostolic visit of the Holy Father in Cameroon, which will take place from 17-20 March 2009, gives us the opportunity to reflect on the beginning of evangelisation in this African country by the German Pallottine missionaries who were sent by the Holy See in 1890. For a greater understanding of the apostolic and missionary activity in this country we are dividing this profile into three parts.

Notizie dal Generalato/Notizie dall'Unione dell'Apostolato Cattolico
From 1 to 4 December, in the Spirituality Centre "St.Vincent Pallotti" at Grottaferrata, Rome, the III Ordinary General Assembly of the Union of Catholic Apostolate will take place on the theme: "From Vision to the Mission". The ordinary General Assembly, which is, according to the General Statutes the highest consulting and deciding body in the Union, is convoked every three years by the General Coordination Council and is presided over by its President. It is attended with decisive votes by the members of the General Coordination Council or, if not possible, by their substitutes; the General Secretary of the Union; the Presidents of the National Coordination Councils or, if not possible, by their Vice Presidents and the three members, and if that is also not possible, by their substitutes, nominated by the General Coordination Council according to the criteria established by the same General Assembly. The General Coordination Council addresses those matters which pertain to the internal life and apostolate of the Union and elects with votes the ten members of the General Coordination Council and their substitutes . The deliberations of the General Assembly are brought to the knowledge of those who are interested and, if the approval of the Pontifical Council for the Laity is not necessary, they enter into vigour within the established period of time. The newly elected General Coordination Council initiates its task immediately and the General Assembly establishes the date within which the President should be elected . Until the election is confirmed by the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the outgoing President, or eventually the Vice President, continues to be responsible for the ordinary administration of the Union and has the right to vote, only if he is elected to the new Council. The new President will succeed Fr. S. Freeman S.A.C who is raised to the dignity of Bishop. The members of the Assembly entrust themselves to the prayers of the entire Union.

About 50 young persons from various countries participated in the II Forum of Pallottine Youth in Rome from August 25th to September 1st 2007. These young people from Pallottine parishes were able to communicate among themselves, like the previous years group, in the course of their visits to the places of special Pallottine significance, to the historical locations in the city, during the prayer in common and by simply being together. While World Youth Day will take place in Sydney (Australia) next year it is also envisaged that the III Forum will be held, probably in the last week of August. Our special thanks to the Pallottine Sisters of the Catholic Apostolate for giving accommodation to the young people in their house at Via di Porta Maggiore (Rome). FOTO

From September 3rd to 12th2007, the II International Meeting of Pallottine Formators was held at the St.Vincent Pallotti Centre of Spirituality, Grottaferrata, Rome. There were 52 participants from five continents. This formative event had two main goals: the ongoing formation of the Pallottine formators in the light of the Ratio Institutionis SAC and providing a lived, international experience of the Union of Catholic Apostolate in the spirit of the Cenacle. The daily programme included conferences on formation themes taken from the Ratio Institutionis, clarifications and questions, discussion in groups and in the plenum, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, cultural evenings which demonstrated the diversity of the Pallottine life in various countries and time for common recreation. Another important moment was the visit to all the Pallottine places. In the final evaluation the participants underlined the following positive aspects: the meeting was a great experience of the internationality of the Pallottine family; the knowledge of the great richness of Pallottine spirituality and the charism increased the love for the Founder and his spirit, and especially for his prophetic vision of the Union of Catholic Apostolate. This meeting also promoted the unity of the Pallottine family and enabled the participants to know the reality of Pallottine formation and the pedagogical approaches in the different continents. In conclusion it was proposed to conduct similar Pallottine formation meetings at the national and continental levels. It is envisaged that the preparation and approval of the definitive text of the Ratio Institutionis will take place after further extensive experience of following the indications of the Ratio in the diverse cultural and formation settings.

The book "Yearning of a Soul" by Fr. Flavian Bonifazi SAC (1919-2001), first published in 2000, has been reprinted and published by the Immaculate Conception Province (IC). It is Pallottine literature which "attempts to synthesize and make contemporary the life and spirituality of St. Vincent Pallotti". Knowing the importance of formation in the spirituality of Pallotti for the entire Pallottine Family, the Rector General, Fr. Jacob Nampudakam requested Fr. Peter Sticco, the Provincial Rector of the Immaculate Conception Province to republish this book and the response was prompt and generous. The Immaculate Conception Province has borne the entire cost of republication and is even willing to send copies freely to all those who wish to have them. The Rector General has written to all the English-speaking Provinces/Regions and Union groups to avail of this opportunity and to use this book as a resource for Pallottine spiritual formation by all the members of the Union.

The serious road accident that occurred in the Great Karoo (South Africa), on Friday 16 October 2009, involved 12 candidates in Preparatory Formation at Step-A-Side and a deacon who was driving the minibus. One of the tyres of the vehicle was burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle. Three candidates lost their lives - Okoli Peter Ndubisi and Muoneke Arinzechukwu Clement from Nigeria and Chituyange Fredrick from Malawi. Three of them returned to the community on the same day with the deacon. The injured ones were initially treated in the nearby hospitals and were later transferred to specialised clinics. The candidate from Mozambique who had gone into coma has regained consciousness. The rest of the injured eventually returned to the community. Let us pray that the Lord may grant eternal life to the deceased and cure the injured ones so that they may be able to continue their vocational journey, even strengthened by this sad experience.

A meeting of the General Council with the Provincial Council of the Swiss Province "S. Nicola di Flüe (CH) took place on 10 May 2007. It was done as a follow-up to the Visitation to the same Province and in the spirit of Law SAC 366 which recommends that the Rector General maintain close contact with the Provinces. Such meetings will also help the General Administration to know the actual situation of the Entities. The themes considered included the future vision of the Province despite the many challenges that it faced with, especially that of the very limited number of confreres. Other issues considered were: vocation promotion, collaboration and the Union of Catholic Apostolate.
On 30 May 2007 the General Council met with the Provincial Council of the Christ the King Province (WA). The principle objective of this meeting was to prepare the Official Visitation scheduled for the months of October-November 2007. In this context the actual situation of the Province and its challenges and future plans were also discussed. Incidentally the Official Visitation coincides with the centenary celebration of the presence of the Pallottines in Poland.
